Post-Modern Drunk: The Flaming R. Kelly Random Ten (10/28/05)
Ugh.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Or maybe that's just rank stupidity.
I used to think I was smart. I might have to revise that opinion. In preparation for an early Friday Random Ten (I'll be moving all of Friday), I tried a repeat of last night's booze with the helpful suggestions of all you loyal roboteers who only have my best interests in mind.
The Flaming Stu was a failure. Adding cough syrup does not make it flammable enough. It does, however, make it a little tastier. And me a little wobblier. So take that into account for this Friday Random Ten.
- "Sally Simpson" by The Who, from Tommy
7/10 - Frankly, Tommy is kind of absurd and self-indulgent. But there's something simple and really enjoyable about this song.
- "You're My Best Friend" by Queen, from Queen's Greatest Hits
4/10 - Uh oh. I can see how this is going already. I'm going to lose my indie cred quickly here. Or maybe it's fun to ironically like Queen. Eh. I can never tell these days. Still, a moderately fun song--not quite the singalong greatness of "Somebody to Love," though.
- "Dreamer in my Dreams" by Wilco, from Being There
5/10 - Wilco comes to salvage some indie cred. Unfortunately, it's a song I don't like, from an album I don't love. Sigh.
- "72" by Turin Brakes, from The Album, Vol. 2
2/10 - From a British compilation I picked up in Edinburgh that portentiously called itself The Album, comes a supremely dull and forgetable song. I've never listened long enough to discover the significance of "72."
- "Hallelujah, by Jeff Buckley" from Grace
10/10 - I first heard this late one night while working in Ireland, and it knocked me on my ass. Holy shit is this Leonard Cohen cover great. Only later did I realize that I'd been dragged to see the spot where Jeff Buckley's body was found--by a friend of an ex-girlfriend while we were on a Hajj to Graceland. A thoroughly weird week. This song is great, though. That's what matters.
- "Farewell Angelina" by Bob Dylan, from The Bootleg Series Volume 1-3
10/10 - Oh god, two heartbreaking and fantastic songs in a row. "Farewell Angelina, the night is on fire, and I must go."
- "Two Fat Feet" by The Fiery Furnaces, from Gallowsbird's Bark
6/10 - I've never listened to an entire Fiery Furnaces album in one sitting. A song, here or there, I can take...even enjoy! Some people love them, though. But yay, indie cred!
- "I'm Sleeping in A Submarine" by The Arcade Fire, from The Arcade Fire
4/10 - I knew Funeral. Funeral was a friend of mine. You, sir, are no Funeral.
- "Penny Lane" by The Beatles, from The Blue Album
6/10 - Sure. It's good. What more needs to be said? You all know this song like you know the multiplication tables. You may not immediately be able to bring up why, or how, but you're familiar with it that we can skip right into...
- "Decatur, or, Round of Applause for your Stepmother!" by Sufjan Stevens, from Illinois
5/10 - A jaunty little story about trying to hate your stepmother and not succeeding. Sufjan is great, and this song is pretty good. And it leads right into the best song of the album, "Chicago."
5.9/10. Thank god for the weepy block of awesomeness there in the middle to salvage this week.
