The Wrong Squid: Greetings to Stevie
Yesterday I went with Collin on an interview just to get out of the house. I didn't actually go into the interview, just along for the ride, though I should have gone in and pretended I was her agent or something. "My client don't work for free, so pony up with the mad cheddar, catch me?" But anyway, when we got back to our street, there was a van in the road beeping, then some guy on the sidewalk went in front of it and nudged something out of the way. When we got closer we realized it was a kitten, and it walked right back out into the road and sat down. There were some other people on the sidewalk looking at it, but none of them seemed like they were going to actually do anything, so we went into the road to grab it. Collin was holding her resume folder in one hand, and grabbing with the other, but the little bugger was fast. Once she got a hold, we realized the kitten's eyes were horribly infected. I went inside and got a box, and Collin called the shelter. They had been flooded out, so they weren't really open (but they answered the phone). We called our regular vet, but they were closed (a half an hour earlier than their web page claimed), but the answering service told us of one that was open for emergencies, so we packed up the kitty in a box, and Mijo (he just had to go) and that is how we got a new kitten.
At the vet place I explained that we found the kitten in the road, its eyes were in bad shape, and who knows what else. After swearing up and down that I would pay for whatever, they asked if I wanted to give it a name. On the ride over I had joked that we might have to call it Stevie (as in Wonder) because I figured it was going to end up blind. So she wrote down Stevie. Then a vet tech came out and I asked if she could determine the gender, and Stevie is a girl. So I guess she is now named after Stevie Nicks. (Had my wits been about me, there are tons of kitten names I had been thinking of, such as Philo Beddoe or Dinsdale (Monty Python nerds will get this reference), but these weren't exactly the circumstances I was expecting to get a new kitten under.) We had actually decided to wait on getting any new pets. We're a little worried about introducing her into the household, but she needs to be kept away from the other pets for a little while.
So, Stevie has one eye that will probably be o.k., and one that will probably not. They gave her some fluids and antibiotics, and I have to give her ointment in the eyes, more anitbiotics, and "get fat quick" food, which she goes bonkers for. She made it through the night, and even got noticably better after eating last night. This morning she was meowing and had her goopy eyes open. Welcome to the family, Stevie.
Dinsdale!
