The Wrong Squid: The Duke
I have an odd ability to run into Mike Dukakis. It all started when I went to my girlfriend's junior prom. The Duke showed up to basically say, "Don't drink and drive," and that was it. When he got there, everyone lined up to shake his hand. As he walked past, I stepped up for my turn, and was decked out of the way by one of his hired goons. I did manage to come away with a nice out of focus picture of his giant head.
Then one night, years later, I was working at a hotel doing audio visual crap. I had been told there wasn't much going on that night, and I was basically there to watch the office. No sooner did I get comfortable than the phone rings and there's a microphone emergency in the only meeting going on. I run down with a replacement, run up to the stage, and then realize that I have been summoned to replace the wireless microphone of Mike Dukakis. As I attached the microphone to his lapel, he quipped to the audience, "Ah, he must not be a Republican." Duke!
