I was deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mary Hansen of Stereolab.
Stereolab is one of those bands that takes me back to a very specific time and place in my life when I listen to their music: 1996 Senior year of college and the summer afterwards. A close friend of mine was dating one of those ultra-hipster girls: she drove a vintage VW Bug that had glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and I believe she was a plant sciences major. She had really cool parties where I would drink codine and she had amazing taste in music. That's where I was introduced to Stereolab, Dub Narcotic and other moogy indy bands.
It seems like everyday now there is an new band with vintage levis and a moog . . . but there are no other Stereolab's. Their music is unique and hard to classify. It's influenced by everything from Jazz to Techno to Indy Rock. And I've heard that they are communists. Damn, there just aren't enough communist underground rock bands.
But really, there are no other bands that sound like them. Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to see them live. I hope that even after the passing of Mary that their music lives on.
I hope this post doesn't sound too self absorbed, but I am having a hard time expressing how much I enjoy their music as well as the importance of their place within the world of music.
Also, it deeply disturbs me when I hear about people dying in bicycle accidents. Although I have always been a cyclist, it has only been the past year that I have braved the city streets on my bike and used it as my primary mode of transportation. Riding a bike in the city makes you feel so alive and free! Try it; once you get over the nerves of gliding along side Escalades and Broncos you will have the time of your life. The adreneline rush is amazing. But it is frightening to hear about accidents. There were a number of deaths in Boston this year due to ignorant drivers.
Keep an eye out when you're on the road . . . bikes are people too.
