Nutshell Kingdom: vacation
2002
It's official. Vacation begins Friday afternoon.
What are you gonna do? you ask. I'm gonna get in Pedro, my silver VW Beetle, and tool up the great interstates of this land, stopping in convenience stores and eating crap. Tonight, I think I'll make some tapes for the drive. I'm going to NYC, which is always exciting in theory, for Matt's big send off.
What tapes should I make? I refuse to transport CDs. I'm thinking Zen Arcade, James Brown Live at the Apollo, Paul's Boutique, and Wilco. These all deserve a solid road trip listen.
Then, I'm gonna spend July 4th at the Jersey shore, combing the boardwalks and swimming in the ocean. Maybe I'll rent a bike. I'll definitely play some skeeball and eat some pizza. Then, next weekend in DC visiting friends.
And I can stay gone as long as I want. And I can go off and do something else if I want. And no one except whoever I happen to be accompanying at any point and time need know who I am or how I came to be there.
Also, I watched the Nickelodeon movie "Snow Day" on TV last nite. I love Nickelodeon productions. Iggy Pop played the long-haired DJ at the skating rink, whose music "has been putting us to sleep for years," as one of the kids says. God. That's just so funny to me.
