Nutshell Kingdom: Hurricane What's-Her-Name
2003

I missed the hurricane completely. Not that there was much action in Lexington, I hear. Just a breeze with rain. For a day. Me, I was bundled in fleece looking at the ocean from Hampton Beach, NH. Anyone from Manchester? What's so great about it? Seriously, that town scared me. I do not think I want to get that job. Anyway, so I'm sitting on a bench, watching the ocean roar away. To my back is an off-season beach town; most of its delicious goodies closed up and off-limits. The hotels were open for reduced rates. We had a cozy dinner downtown. I would rather have dined with a view . . . but that's the price of off-season.

The next day, we drove all the way back to Virginia. Twelve hours (well two of those were in a mall near Nyack, NY buying little Japanese bowls and cups for cheap). The whole drive, we had like three showers. One in Worchester, one in Jersey and one in Harrisburg, PA. No hurricane. Makes me a little sad not be in a inflatable liferaft drifting down the streets of Baltimore.
