Nutshell Kingdom: Questions Concerning Children
2004

Have you ever noticed how many kids are running about in the world? They're like small versions of us. Except they run for no reason. They run to the bathroom. They run to the car. They run to the ferris wheel. They run through the restaurant, going nowhere at all. They run from my car when I drive through a big group of them. Why won't they just slow down and appreciate life and all its many blessings? They get all scraped and cut and break arms and legs as if they grew on trees. They have no respect for us grown people and will not try to win us over or suck up at all. Don't they know that they'll never get ahead that way? Why are they always so messy? And that whole not recognizing the indoor/outdoor voice distinction. And the crying! God, do they ever shut up? I don't understand them and I guess I never will.
