Yesterday was the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at my student's school. A gang of tutors walked over to the nearby school from work yesterday, to be greeted by students in aprons with Very Serious waiter demeanors. They led us to the gym, which was set up with long tables and fold-up chairs.
I looked around at the other luncheon attendees and it was pretty funny: Our group - clad mostly in denim and t-shirts - looked like a bunch of overgrown kids in contrast to the teachers and volunteers in their blouses and skirts.
What is there to eat at a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon? There was room temperature lasagna with indeterminate flecks of meat. There was iceberg lettuce with lots of dressing. There was a basket of cold rolls. There was an enormous cake with a rainbow on it. There was so much heart.
Afterwards, three of us were given a tour of the school by our students. Memorable stops included the haunted bathrom in the basement where there is a stall where, a long time ago, "this football player and his girlfriend were making out and then they died!". If you stand on the toilet (which they demonstrated) and peer behind the wall, you can see an ominous football that is too far down for anyone to reach.
Today the students are doing their final public speaking presentations. My student is doing: "Exercise is an important part of every day". We worked hard on that one. "See, that guy there? He is my boyfriend. But you know what? We never talk." How come? "Nothing to talk about" How about asking: "What did you watch on tv last night?" I mean, there is SO much you can talk to him about. Rolls eyes. How hard can it be? Look at him there, sitting on the chair, all slouched and cool. "See? That's what I'm talkin' about."
